How To Build Fulfilling Alliances

Not all friendships are created equal. Some drain us. Some sustain us. And some — rare and sacred — actually feed our soul and help us grow into who we are meant to be. These are the friendships worth cultivating.

A true soul friendship is a unique kind of relationship. It brings together like-minded women for mutual benefit, without requiring either person to lose herself in the process. It allows each woman to express her authentic self while contributing her gifts to something larger than herself. When we come together in this way, we are stronger — and what we create between us is more rewarding than anything we could build alone.

Soul friendships are about interdependency, not codependency. In Kabbalah, this is beautifully exemplified by the Tree of Life — the blueprint of Creation. It contains 10 different vessels that work together to create harmony. The principle governing all their relationships is the balance between Chesed — kindness, expansiveness and giving — and Din — discernment, boundaries and withholding. When these two forces are balanced, Rachamim — mercy and compassion — is activated. This is the energy at the heart of every truly nourishing friendship.

The Tree also teaches us about the four kinds of relationships we encounter:

  • Giver / Giver
  • Giver / Taker
  • Sharers
  • Taker / Taker

The most fulfilling friendships are built between sharers — women who each bring their gifts and receive those of the other in equal measure. A friendship between a chronic giver and a chronic taker cannot sustain itself long term. The giver will eventually become depleted, and resentment will follow.

In Hebrew, the word brit — Beit, Reish, Yod, Tav — translates to “covenant” or “alliance.” When the letters are rearranged, we find the permutation yeter, meaning “abundance and surplus.” Behind every true friendship, there is an opportunity for mutual growth. The right friendship doesn’t divide your energy — it multiplies it.

Whether you are longing for deeper friendships, or navigating a relationship that no longer feels nourishing, together we will explore what kind of friend you are — and what kind of friendships your soul is calling for.

5 Ways to Build Friendships That Feed Your Soul:

  1. Know what you bring. Get clear on your gifts before entering any deep friendship. You cannot give authentically if you don’t know your own value.
  2. Notice the energy exchange. After time with a friend, do you feel energized or depleted? Your body always knows the difference.
  3. Choose sharers, not takers. Pay attention to reciprocity. Does she celebrate your wins? Does she show up for you the way you show up for her?
  4. Define what you need. Soul friendships require honesty. Be willing to express your needs and invite your friend to express hers.
  5. Treat your friendships as sacred. Invest in them. Show up. Be present. A friendship tended with Chesed and Din in balance becomes one of the greatest gifts of your life.
