ESTABLISH
Healthy
Boundaries

Can you establish boundaries as an expression of love?

Many of us find it difficult to set boundaries as and it seems to contradict the concept of unconditional love. According to the Kabbalistic equation, the sphere Gevurah is associated with setting limits and boundaries. Gevurah means strength ﹘ the strength to set limits and boundaries. On the Tree, Gevurah is located on the opposite side of the sphere, Chesed (the sefirah or sphere of loving kindness). The two sephirot share the common ground of love﹘chesed as unbounded love, Gevurah as bounded love. In other words, Gevurah represents the need to express love by saying, “no.” Setting boundaries is another form of expressing love.

There may be a lot of fear about what may happen whenwe choose to set boundaries and say “no” to others. But doing so not only keeps us from enabling another’s self limiting habits, it also helps us distinguish between our own experiences and the experience of other people.

In Kabbalah, this process is referred to as the “Individuation of Divinity.” Each one of us is an individualized expression of the Divine. Having our own experiences allow us to become accountable for our own actions, and more importantly, it is a way for us to fully experience Divinity.

In Hebrew, the word gvul (letters: Gimel, Beit, Vav, and Lamed) translates to “boundary.” Within the word gvul is the word bul, which means “stamp.” The action of creating boundaries helps us to distinguish between the different parts of ourselves.

In the Mishna, it is written: “If I am not for myself, who is for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” (Mishna 14, Hillel the Elder). In other words, to have healthy boundaries, we must balance giving (Chesed) and withholding (Gevurah).
