ESTABLISH
Healthy
Boundaries

Can you establish boundaries as an expression of love?

Perhaps surprisingly, creating healthy boundaries is a common problem. Many of us find it difficult to establish healthy boundaries as it seems to contradict the concept of unconditional love. According to Kabbalah, setting healthy boundaries is associated with the sphere GevurahGevurah means strength ﹘ the strength to set limits. Furthermore, on the Tree, Gevurah is located on the opposite side of the sphere, Chesed, the sefirah or sphere of loving kindness. Together, the two sephirot share the common ground of love﹘chesed as unbounded love, Gevurah as bounded love. In other words, Gevurah represents the need to express love by saying, “no.” Simply put, setting healthy boundaries is another form of expressing love.

Fear Of Setting Healthy Boundaries

Surely, there may be a lot of fear about what may happen whenwe choose to set healthy boundaries and say “no” to others. But, doing so keeps us from enabling another’s self limiting habits. In addition,  it also helps us distinguish between our own experiences and the experience of other people.

Notably, in Kabbalah the process of setting healthy boundaries referred to as the “Individuation of Divinity.” This means, each one of us is an individualized expression of the Divine. Basically, having our own experiences allows us to become accountable for our own actions, and, more importantly, it is a way for us to fully experience Divinity.

In Hebrew, the word gvul (letters: Gimel, Beit, Vav, and Lamed) translates to “boundary.” Furthermore, within the word gvul is the word bul, which means “stamp.” Simply put, the action of creating boundaries helps us to distinguish between the different parts of ourselves.

In the Mishna, it is written: “If I am not for myself, who is for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” (Mishna 14, Hillel the Elder). In other words, this means to have healthy boundaries, we must balance giving (Chesed) and withholding (Gevurah).
